First Responders and Veterans Support
Several of our psychologists are specially trained to work with first responders and veterans. Both populations have a high rate of mental health concerns including trauma, depression and anxiety. First responders frequently support people on the worst days of their life then have to immediately move on to the next crisis. This is a lot for the body to hold without time to process. First responders include police, RCMP, veterans, firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, front line community and child welfare workers, doctors, nurses, 911 dispatch operators and teachers. Essentially anyone who works in an area that crisis occurs. These careers are stressful at the best of times and traumatic more often than not. This can impact your ability to manage the emotional distress of others in work as well as add stress and conflict to your personal life. Our first responder psychologists are here to support you.
Some areas of focus in first responder therapy:
Struggles with shift work/sleep concerns
Work conflict
Vicarious trauma
Anger management
Unhealthy or risky coping skills
Therapeutic modalities used in first responder therapy:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Several of our first responder psychologists and therapists are approved providers for Edmonton Police (Jody and Lyndsay), Edmonton Fire, RCMP, VAC and work frequently with EMTs, teachers, nurses, psychologists, 911 operators and other health professionals.
